Engaging young minds in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) early on builds skills that last a lifetime. This spring, The Electronovas teamed up with Kumon in Chantilly to run a hands-on 6-week STEM camp for K-6 students. The program combined lessons in computer-aided design (CAD), programming, and creative project work, giving kids a chance to build and bring their ideas to life. With support from Ms. Sunny at Kumon, the camp offered a unique learning experience that blended technology and creativity in a fun, supportive environment.

Hands-On Learning with CAD and Programming

The camp divided students into two groups based on age and skill level. Older students, from grades 3 to 6, focused on CAD software like Onshape and TinkerCAD. They learned how to design 3D models, exploring concepts like shapes, dimensions, and spatial reasoning. Each student created their own project, ranging from simple toys to practical objects. The highlight came at the end of the camp when their designs were 3D printed and handed back to them during the final class. This tangible result made the learning experience memorable and rewarding.

Younger students, from kindergarten to grade 3, worked on programming through code.org. They learned basic coding concepts and logic by creating their own games. This group’s capstone project was a playable game they designed themselves, which helped build confidence and problem-solving skills. The programming lessons were tailored to be age-appropriate, ensuring that even the youngest campers could grasp the fundamentals of coding.

Building Skills Through Creative Projects

The camp emphasized creativity alongside technical skills. Students were encouraged to think about what they wanted to create and how to solve design challenges. For example, one student designed a custom keychain with their initials, while another created a miniature car model. These projects helped students apply STEM concepts in a personal way.

The programming group also showed creativity by designing unique game characters and storylines. This approach made coding feel less like a chore and more like play. By the end of the camp, every student had a project they could be proud of, whether a 3D printed model or a game they could share with family and friends.

Support and Collaboration with Kumon

Ms. Sunny at Kumon played a key role in organizing the camp. Her support helped coordinate schedules, provide classroom space, and connect with families. Kumon’s welcoming environment made it easy for students to focus and enjoy learning. The collaboration between The Electronovas and Kumon created a smooth, well-run program that met the needs of both students and parents.

Why STEM Camps Matter

Programs like this 6-week STEM camp provide more than just technical skills. They build confidence, encourage curiosity, and show kids that they can create and control technology. Early exposure to STEM subjects can inspire future careers and lifelong learning habits. By combining CAD design, programming, and hands-on projects, the camp gave students a well-rounded introduction to technology.

Parents reported seeing their children excited to talk about what they learned and eager to continue exploring STEM topics. The camp also helped students develop teamwork and communication skills by working alongside peers and instructors.

What’s Next for The Electronovas and Kumon

The success of this camp opens the door for future STEM programs at Kumon and beyond. The Electronovas plan to expand these opportunities, reaching more students and introducing new technologies. The goal is to keep making STEM accessible and enjoyable for young learners in Chantilly and surrounding communities.

If you are interested in learning more about upcoming camps or want to support STEM education, keep an eye on The Electronovas’ announcements. Programs like this show how community partnerships can create meaningful learning experiences that prepare kids for the future.
